Closer working for culture

Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge, has announced plans to strengthen Department for Culture Media and Sport engagement in regional policy through a new, simplified way of working.

The Department's four key agencies in England: Arts Council England, Sport England, English Heritage and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council will have a duty to work together to jointly deliver shared priorities across the culture and sport agendas.

The priorities include:

  • Regional strategies
  • Local Area Agreements
  • Local government commitment to culture and sport
  • Place shaping
  • LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) liaison on 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad.

These new arrangements will still enable the four agencies to continue their sector specific work.

Paul Lander, MLA Council Director, said: "The review is good news for frontline services and through our own restructure we are setting the pace to move this agenda forward. We are creating a regional presence that is flexible, fast on its feet and fully committed to the concept of joint working. We will ensure that museums, libraries and archives continue to make a strong contribution to regional strategies and their users really benefit from the new arrangements.

"MLA Council is already working closely with the other cultural agencies on key agendas including the Living Places Partnership and is making the case for culture in regeneration, plans for the Cultural Olympiad and the 'Find your Talent' programme."

The new plans will come into effect over the next 12 months and replace the Department's eight non-departmental public bodies, the Regional Cultural Consortiums.
